Has anyone tried the Fragrance Finder tool on the Sephora website? It is way too much fun. You tell them a perfume that you love, and based on your tastes they recommend new perfumes for you. At first it seemed gimmicky, but to my surprise, many of their recommendations were spot-on (for example, they recommended Guerlain Shalimar for fans of Editions de Parfum Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur, which is often considered a modern-day Shalimar). Of course, some are a just a little bit off base (lovers of the leathery Robert Piguet Bandit should consider… Bvlgari Rose Essentielle??)
Anyway, when Gucci Envy was suggested as a substitute for both Christian Dior Diorissimo and Chanel 28 La Pausa, I had to try it. Gucci Envy was created by one of my favorite perfumers, Maurice Roucel (the man behind Musc Ravageur and Lolita Lempicka L de Lolita Lempicka), so I was imagining something rich and hyper-sensual. Instead, Envy opens on a sharp, green lily note. Although it’s not what I was expecting, I still liked the opening quite a bit. It struck me as Diorissimo Light, a very pretty lily without the richness of Diorissimo. HOWEVER. After ten minutes, Envy began to smell distinctly soapy. Turns out I hate soapy, especially in the context of a rather powerful scent like Envy (like all Maurice Roucel creations, Envy has a STRONG presence). I can’t say I much enjoyed wearing this.
There is one thing that I love about Envy, and that is the ad campaign. The vast majority of perfume ads have at least some sexuality, but the Envy ads are hilariously over the top. Get a room, y’all!
Gucci Envy is available at Sephora for $50 for 1 ounce, $70 for 1.7 ounces, and $90 for 3.4 ounces.

Gucci and I do not get along in any form, be it fashion, handbags, perfumes.
That said, the Sephora fragrance finder has always been really like a wild card to me. I like searching Old World niche’ perfumes to see what awful mainstream fragrance they think it smells like. Apparently, my beloved Melograno smells like Stila Jade Blossom because it’s such a ‘soft floral’ …
And that ad is scandalous.
Teeheehee! I have never smelled Stila Jade Blossom, but apparently that awful Rachel Zoe wears it, which is enough to make me want to steer clear. Her clients (Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Keira Knightley) always seem to come down with a slight case of anorexia.
That Fragrance Editions that Signature Scents recommends below is actually pretty good, I’m having wayyy too much fun with it. For Melograno they suggest Van Cleef & Arpels First, Rochas Madame Rochas, and Sonia Rykiel Rykiel Woman. Seems a bit closer to the mark 🙂

I love a green floral, but somehow have yet to try Envy. I suppose the idea of it, in comparison with Chamade, Le Temps d’une Fete, and No. 19, seemed silly.
Next time I drag myself to the mall I’ll see if I can find a tester, though.
Mals, this is no No. 19, for sure. It is pretty, especially in the beginning. I hate to say it, but perhaps Maurice Roucel should stick to orientals. When he tries to shake things up, things like “Insolence” tend to happen.
BTW, I now have a sample of L’Heure Bleue (in EDP, not EDT) and I am really taken with it. Such strange topnotes, though!
I haven’t find the Sephora fragrance finder. But I’ve used Fragrance Editions in the past, which is okay – but I do find once you’ve used it a few times you find that it recommends the same fragrances again and again. You’re right! It suggested the same three fragrances to me after only three tries. This is a big improvement on the Sephora tool, though, since that only recommends perfumes that are carried at Sephora (and they often recommend ones that they don’t even carry anymore!) Thank you for the tip!
I remember wearing and liking this perfume many moons ago – I think revisit it although I’m not so much a fan of soapy either.
ITA the ad is pretty OTT, kind of a Tom Ford-esque image

I had never really experienced soapiness in a perfume before, and I certainly didn’t detect any when I bought it! What I think must have happened is that I went into Sephora, realized that my nose was so stuffed up that I couldn’t smell a thing, took some Dayquil, and apparently didn’t wait long enough for it to kick in, lol.
I bought it twice and wore it with pleasure- once in 2000 and once in 2002. I remember I liked that it was a persistent perfume because I never purchase light airy ones. It had a distinctive sillage, sweet and flowery and reminded me the smell of white and yellow fresias, which in my country are given to women in winter time and which manage to fill up with their powerful fragrance vast spaces… it also smellt of white madonna lillies( a fragrance I love ). Well, I guess it is a perfume for floral lovers. Since I got married wearing Amarige (at that time I was 20 and thought Amarige was suave and light), Envy to me it is not that strong, on the contrary,it is about average 🙂
