When I first heard the name of Justin Bieber’s debut fragrance (God, I can’t believe I just typed those words), I immediately thought of Aragorn’s rallying speech in The Return of the Kings. You know the one: “Someday we may fall, but it is not this day!” Unfortunately, after spending some quality time with young Bieber’s perfume, my version of Aragorn’s sermon is significantly less uplifting.
“Someday, perfume companies may realize that the tweenage mall rats to whom they are so aggressively marketing cannot actually afford their perfumes, but it is not this day! Someday, perfume companies may realize that a fancy bottle and a celebrity spokesperson don’t hide a bad perfume any better than autotune and perfectly flippy hair hide a bad singer, but it is not this day!”
It is a TRAVESTY that nobody hires this beautiful man anymore. A travesty, I say.
Someday’s notes, as per the Sephora website, are mandarin, juicy pear, wild berries, jasmine, creamy florals, vanilla, and strong musks. The pear and vanilla come through the most, rendering the scent very sweet. It bears more than a passing resemblance to Juicy Couture’s Viva La Juicy. Thankfully, unlike many other celebrity scents, Someday is quite light. I tested it along with Rihanna’s new fragrance and preferred Someday, simply because it was quieter and therefore less obnoxious. Someday is inoffensive to smell, although highly offensive to those of us who expect more from the perfume industry.
Interestingly enough, we may have a celebrity endorsed perfume in which the celebrity not only personally met with French perfumers, did relentless hours of research, but also has said that just because something sells doesn’t necessarily make it good and made a point that there will be absolutely no vanilla. That person is Dita von Teese, and honestly I know she’s a glorified stripper but I love her and she wears beautiful vintage Caron and is looking to make a signature scent that she would personally wear. There’s a celebrity endorsed fragrance I would wear. Until then, not a chance.
This Bieber stuff, blech. Sounds like a sugary sweet nightmare.
Oh, I have no doubt that Dita’s fragrance will be spectacular. I’ve really come around to Ms. von Teese recently, because she conducts herself with more class than most anyone else- be they glorified strippers, non-glorified strippers, or non-strippers- in Hollywood. Her style is to die for and I hope that she gets to make the fragrance of her dreams (unlike poor Sarah Jessica Parker, sounds like she was too daring for Coty).
I follow her on Twitter and she’s a delight. I think the moment I completely fell in love with her was when she tweeted a picture from her Parisienne apartment where the balcony doors were open showing a view of the Eiffel Tower at night while she stayed in and ironed this gorgeous French toile vintage dress. Everything about her is very classic Old Hollywood and I appreciate the fact that her love for it is so genuine that she’s made it a lifestyle.
I have really high hopes for her fragrance.
I would love for her to do a clothing line, too! Can you imagine how amazing that would be?? Victoria Beckham already makes great knockoffs of Roland Mouret’s old designs, but it’s still just a wee bit out of my price range.
Oh, Dita doing a clothing line would be to die for. She already has stockings and some cardigans she sells through Wheels & Dollbaby. Maybe she’ll expand into an entire line one day.
I am curious about the Dita scent, too. She has such a strong sense of style in her clothes, her shows, etc. Hopefully that translates to her perfume. Another celeb scent I am interested in is Heidi Klum’s. She’s just such a likeable celebrity that I really want to like whatever they slap her name on.
Heidi is adorable. I tip my hat to all of those models (Heidi, Tyra, Padma Lakshimi) who were smart enough to use TV as a way to extend their careers, which would ordinarily have a far shorter shelf life.
Someday, I’ll be older and fatter.
