The “Dammit Jim” Giveaway!

Today is the birthday of DeForest Kelley, the actor who played Dr. McCoy in the original Star Trek! With his manic eyes and good-natured grumpiness, McCoy was always my favorite Star Trek character. So in honor of DeForest Kelley’s birthday, I’m giving away a 50 ml bottle of the lovely gardenia perfume Annick Goutal Un Matin d’Orage!

I found it at Anthropologie, and it has been sprayed once. This giveaway is open to everyone, regardless of location. It will be closed one week from now. To enter, please leave a comment telling us your favorite Star Trek character. If you do not have a favorite Star Trek character, please provide a reasonable explanation for why this is.

  1. I don’t know much about Star Trek. I’m into Star Wars. Like obsessively into it. Like used to be an administrator of Wookieepedia into it. Like have two bookshelves full of Star Wars novels into it.

Pretty much the only Star Trek I have ever seen is the recent movie reboot, which I liked a lot.

I would say my favorite characters from that were Kirk and Uhura…

  2. I’d have to go with Dr. Spock. He and I have similar ears.
This Goutal sounds like it will be a lovely spring/summer scent, maybe layered too.

  3. I always have to go with Spock..1.0 Nimoy and 2.0 Quinto..both mighty fine 🙂 oh and I love your perfume diary.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and for entering the giveaway! I actually have to say that I wasn’t crazy about Zach Quinto’s Spock, but I think the man himself is gorgeous, a good actor, and very brave for publicly identifying himself as gay and speaking out against homophobia.

  4. We now play Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock instead of the boring version.

Spock is Awesome. Scotty is Awesome. And I love McCoy for being a curmudgeon and saying exactly what he thought and never shutting up when he ought to have. Uhura always struck me as being the smartest of the bunch, best exemplified by her ability to Not say exactly what she thought. You could see it in her eyes.

But my heart belongs to Kirk, which you already knew.

(However, don’t include me in the draw – I like Md’O but don’t love it, and the absolute last thing I need is another bottle of perfume that I don’t love.)

    1. I felt the same way about Md’O, which is why it’s now up for grabs! I agree that Uhura always seemed very bright, and I really like that the recent Star Trek reboot made her a talented linguist.

  5. Wow, I guess I have some explaining to do 🙂
I have not watched the Star Trek because I did not grow up in the US, my first language isn’t English, and I often miss popular culture references, which is not always good since I have to deal with popular culture because of my discipline (I am in social sciences). But I think my friends and my husband were into Star Trek, so I’ll ask them about their favorite characters and will learn! Thanks for an opportunity to learn and a giveaway! 😉

  6. Gardenia and I aren’t friends, I don’t think, so no need to enter me in the draw, but I will tell you that my favorite Star Trek character is Spock! Because I love a logical man… 😉

  7. ok… admittedly.. i had a kid crush on Chekov… but i was probably 6 years old. i didn’t even know what i tri-corder (sp?) was, but i knew i wanted Lt. Uhura’s job… i wanted to make an ear piece that didn’t look like it would hurt every time you put it in your ear. i swear that’s why she was always touching her ear… “Captain, i’m picking up a strange signal… it’s my ear bleeding from a pointy ear piece.”

(i will also say that Tribbles is a terrific answer!)

    1. Awwww! The new Chekov is totally crush-worthy. That kid is adorable! Uhura’s ear piece looked super uncomfortable, but I read in an interview that it was actually custom-made for her and was very nice!

  8. My heart beats for captain Picard from TNG, a thinking, sensitive man, sometimes a little sad…although Spock would be my second choice 🙂 . My brother was a big fan so I think I’ve seen most episodes of both the old series and TNG and most of the films!

    1. Guinan is the best! She just swoops in every few episode, dispenses some wisdom, and then hangs out in the bar. Guinan knows what’s up.

  9. McCoy has to be my favorite from the first Star Trek series and movies. I feel like he steals every scene. I grew up watching TNG, and I remember being obsessed with Wesley Crusher as a 5 year old. Re-watching the series has drastically changed my mind. I love Will Riker’s facial hair! When he grows that beard in the second season, look out! As a 5-year old, I had an away-team play set, complete with space ship, Jean-Luc Picard, Data, Wesley Crusher and Geordi La Forge with tricorder in hand. Can you tell I come from a long line of Trekkies? Thanks for the amazing giveaways and the perfume diaries!

    1. I have only seen one episode in which Riker did not have facial hair, and it was a terrible experience. His beard is SUCH an improvement. I can see Wesley being very relatable to a child, but I find him so damn whiny! Thank you so much for entering the giveaway!

  10. wow, what an interesting response.Gardenia is right up my alley. having said that ,i must admit that my fave character is also my very favourite episode. That being ,Lal, Data’s ‘daughter’. I might also state the fact i’m not really a devotee to star trek, due to the fact my hubby is a trek fan from way back!!! so I have watched/listened to many an episode series or movie, whilst i “play’ on my computer. As I write this I am “enduring’ Enterprise!!!!!
Anyway, returning to “lal’, I rather enjoyed the arguments re her being a ‘Censured being ‘or not.The ending of that episode left me weeping for about a week, and I have actually asked hubby if we can watch it again!!!!!!

    1. OMG, the Lal episode is SO SAD. I am sorry that you are an unwilling Star Trek watcher, lol! My poor boyfriend has had to learn to tolerate it too. But I have had to start watching South Park for him, so I think it is only fair.

  11. Seven of Nine because of that thing on her face and stupendously improbable frontage. Followed by the Borg Queen, because of her even more things on her face. Must be a. Bofg trait. I am not a regular viewer.

  12. My OH is a Star Trek fan, but he only follows Seven of Nine/Jeri Ryan on Twitter because he admires her acting. Beam me up!

My favourite character is the Unknown Crewman who bites the dust whenever they land on an unknown planet. (Great spoof in “Galaxy Quest”.)

    cheerio:-)

  13. I’m with Warum on this one. It upsets me (a little) that I’m missing on some cultural referrences from time to time but I’m afraid it’s too late for me to try to catch up with everything, so I voted for staying in the present time.

    1. Oh, don’t you dare be upset about that! But I do want to suggest that you watch the recent (2010) Star Trek movie. It was a very good movie (even non-Trekkies love it) and it gives you all the frame of reference you need to understand the old episodes. Although my father has always been a Star Trek fan, I only started watching the old episodes myself after seeing the new movie just 2 years ago!

  14. The original Star Trek was before my time, but when I was younger I watched Voyager and Deep Space Nine all the time. My favorite is a tie between Quark, because he is hilarious, and Seven of Nine, because Jeri Ryan is sexy as hell.

  15. I’m also of the “I don’t have a favorite” group, just because I haven’t seen any of them recently enough or enough times to have a favorite. I did like the Data character though. Is he Star Trek?

(I’m going to stop digging my hole now.)

    1. Data is totally Star Trek! 😉 He is a member of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, which was filmed in the 80’s and 90’s. Spock, Kirk, and McCoy are all part of “The Original Series” from the 1960’s.

  16. My husband says, “DATA. I like DATA. He is supposed to be emotionless, and yet sometime provides the best comic relief and in his quest t be more human he makes us realize how silly some of our own emotions are.”

So – um, I guess my husband just entered.

I can’t saw I’m a Trekkie…. but my favorite Harry Potter character is Lupin!

    1. Thank you for entering, Kathleen’s husband! 🙂 Data was such an interesting character. So in the original series, a main character was Spock, who as a Vulcan (a species that believes in logic above all else) looked down on humanity for being illogical. As an android, Data had many of the same mannerisms as Spock, but as your husband said, his motivation is the complete opposite.

Lupin is wonderful. I’m glad the movies didn’t feature that awful scene where he’s ready to abandon his family bc he can’t deal with Tonks being pregnant. I hate that scene!!

  17. I have an amusing Star Trek story. About a year ago I had a sound system put in by the Geek Squad, and I was told by my salesman if I’d wait a little longer I could get their two best guys. So about two weeks later these guys show up. They are obviously A TEAM, finishing each others sentences. So they get set up and long haired guy says to me, “Answer quickly, Star Trek or Star Wars”. “Star Trek” I say. They cheer and high five and I’m in. Correct answer, obviously. They ended up staying 8 hours and only charging me for one hour service. True Star Trek lovers.

Anyway, to answer your question, I would have to say Spok, because like him, I’ve felt a bit different from those around me from time to time.

  18. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Star Trek and I’ve been meaning to watch more. Alas, Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars have dominated my tv. I love Spock (duh) and all vulcans really. I also had a HUGE crush on Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher (my 12 year old self drooled over him). I also like T’Pol because she’s hot. I want to be her for Halloween. Thanks for the draw, by the way. I love Annick Goutal and some of the deals that can be found in the perfume section at Anthropologie.

    1. Thank you for entering the draw, Mo! Anthropologie needs to stop having such a great sale section right now. I am trying to stop buying from them in light of their Santorum-supporting ways, and they are making it very difficult for me.

    1. I had never seen that before, and found it absolutely delightful. I suspect the episode must have involved Picard being under a spell, like the musical episode of Buffy.

Some might consider this sacrilege, but I advise starting with the recent new Star Trek movie. It is funny and exciting. Even non-Trekkies love it, and it will give you a good sense of the characters.

    1. Delightfully so! 🙂 If it does not make you even grumpier, perhaps you should watch a few McCoy-centric episodes- you might find him a kindred spirit!

  19. I grew up in a country where Star Trek was forbidden ( along with many other cultural items) as ” capitalist opium for the people” so, sorry, I can’t have an opinion
I’d love to enter the draw, though

    1. This is particularly strange because in Star Trek, they don’t use money! It was eliminated by the 23rd century! Where did you grow up, Irina?

  20. I cannot possibly choose a single Star Trek character. I love all of the series so much. Though if pressed I must confess it is a toss up between Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks -DS9)
or Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart – The Next Generation). I love that this post is in honor of DeForest Kelley. I love his character’s crankiness, he is a great foil for Kirk.

    1. Love your choices, Rosie! I must shamefully admit that I have not seen any of the Star Trek series besides TOS and TNG- I never see DS9 in reruns.

  21. Spock! Although the one in the original is pretty irreproachable, I did think that Quinto did s commendable job in playing such an iconic character 🙂

    1. I just couldn’t handle how emotional New Spock was. I think it was a good choice on Quinto’s part- it adds dimension to the character, and makes the character his own- but it just felt too far from Original Spock to me. Same with New Uhura- also a great character, but so different from Original Uhura. New Kirk, however, felt instantly right to me. Chris Pine did an AMAZING job.

      1. Oooouh yeaaaah… Han Solo… that boy made me feel somewhat ¿¡¿’horny’?!? when I was just 6 or 7 years old or so…very small!
and I think that’s no small achievement but quite a remarkable accomplishment haha!

  22. I was never a big Star Trek fan, but I would have to say Spock was my favorite – I think it was the ears, and the flatline emotions.

    1. I LOVE the idea of Uhura in Shalimar! BTW, I am always thrilled to see a new perfume blog! Can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

  23. I promised to enter every giveaway, so…. Absolutely a Star Trek fan (of the original only, I didn’t have a TV when the others came along). Still love to catch the occasional re-run

Favourite character has to be Spock, though I am a recent fan of William Shatner through Boston Legal. And I truly love his ability to send himself up and the fact that he’s still a Canadian (not even dual citizenship).

I think Lisa’s answer of “tribbles” is brilliant. The Trouble with Tribbles is a very fun episode.

I haven’t seen the new movie yet, which is a shame because I understand it’s very good.

  24. Well, in the original series, it was Mr. Spock (of course!). But I’d also like to put in a plug for Jean-Luc Picard in “The Next Generation” (LOVE Patrick Stewart!).

    Thanks for the drawing!

  25. I wish I were a Trekkie, Ari, and I say it LOUD, and PROUD of this declaration!

I really loved and enjoyed the serials when every time I had the chance to watch some episode. Even I remember going enjoying to at least one of the movies at theatre with some friends… and liking all that StarTrek classic themes -time travel stories to change the past, social positive messages about humanity and future, etc-
(I’m great FAN of The Twilight Zone classic version, which I find slightly similar in concept)

Unfortunately, I never had the time, the chance… to follow the Enterprise in a regular way, I watched only part of serial and I am sorry I missed a lot. So I never became a real fan (never too late! I still would like to!)… 😉

I think my favorites were from the original series, first version… Captain Kirk and Spock !!!!
but also from the last one, Jean-Luc Picard is a total winner…. and DATA from the movie I watched… I think the one I watched it has to be ‘FIRST CONTACT’ (from 1996)

Thanks but don’t include me in the giveaway, though. I know Un Matin d’Orage, sadly on my skin smells like your fingers after peeling a ripped peach and you can’t wash your hands properly or immediately, so you have to lick the fingers and even that, it smells ripped peach all day (do you know that??). I don’t know what’s wrong with that… I really love gardenia note!
