One of my greatest fears is that I will eventually become a perfume snob. What if I wake up one day and find myself suddenly only able to enjoy perfumes that are at least $250 and exclusive to Belgium? What if I start saying things like “Oh my God, Becky, look at her Pink Sugar”? I have decided to preempt this potential descent into perfume snobbery with an exciting new project: I am going to explore the perfumes on the 2011 top 20 best sellers list. I am going to do my damnedest to review these mainstream scents without automatically dismissing them as generic or derivative. I will be subjecting them to the judgement of my boyfriend, my college-age peers, and anyone else that I can convince to smell my wrist. Someone is buying these perfumes, and I intend to find out why.
EauMG, Daly Beauty, and No Disassemble Charlie No. 5 have all expressed interest in participating in this project. Would anyone else like to join me in my experiments? Please let me know so that I can provide links to your results! You absolutely do not have to be a perfume blogger to participate! If you do not have your own perfume blog, email me your thoughts on/reviews of these fragrances at scentsofself@gmail.com and I will post them here. You are also 100% welcome to use my pitifully drawn banner.
Oh lord. I would LOVE to do this. Yes yes yes.
YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!
Ooh, can I play too? I’m fairly certain that I actually have samples of several of these in my possession, and I know I have mall access to the rest of them. Which is something I can’t usually count on…
(Luckily for you, Pink Sugar has dropped off the best-seller list. Unluckily for me, I have to put Angel on my skin. Eep. Of course, the patchouli might kill me. The things I sacrifice!)
I suspect that Pink Sugar was actually never on this list, as it is exclusive to Sephora and this list seems to only cover department stores. You brave, brave woman, doing battle with Angel. It’s like David and Goliath!
You might be right about Pink Sugar. News flash: my mall DOES NOT CARRY ANGEL. (What to do, what to do… oh, snap! Guess I can’t review it!)
I could buy it at Wal-Mart, if I were willing to throw down about $70 for a 1 oz bottle in clamshell packaging. There’s no tester for it, though. They have testers for Heidi Klum Shine, ET Violet Eyes, Mariah’s new thingy, and a couple more I can’t remember.
I keep telling you, my local mall perfume selection is laaaaaame.
I’m in, if you’ll have me. 🙂
HAVE you?? I’ve never been more excited!!! (Which probably means that I need to get out of the house more, but whatevs.)
RE: getting out of the house more– that makes two of us, which is why this challenge appealed to me. I must overcome my deep-seated panicky fear of department stores!… Is there a deadline?
Some things I actually cannot stand, like Chance, I know that — but we might as well make it official: give it a wear and then send to the next person who participates! So, I’m game without a blog! I don’t have to do all 20 in 20 days, right? yeeek! 🙂
I don’t think I’ll ever wake up a perfume snob — there will be too much Estee Lauder’s scents in my collection for that.
I would be happy to send you samples! And no, there’s no time limit or coordination required. I too am an Estee Lauder fan, and honestly treasure my Azuree Soleil.
Let me see which ones I have from the top 20 list and I can share them with the community. I do know for sure I have chance regular and light blue. Will dive into the pile and look!
I have bottles or samples of all but three of the top twenty, so I think I will participate. 🙂 I can test the other three or get samples. I remember Prada Candy and reviewed it, but I don’t think any local counters have it so I can refresh my memory.
WHOOOOOOOO!!!!
(I’m really excited!!)
i can review some male fragrances for you if you like. I also have some graphic design experience and can make you a better banner if you are interested in that as well. ;).
Oooh, Rick, that sounds wonderful! Would you consider taking on the top 20 masculines list? http://boisdejasmin.typepad.com/_/2011/09/top-selling-masculine-fragrances-usa-2010-popular-perfumes.html
Ill take a crack at it, sure.
Ari, I absolutely would love to participate, but since next monday the 13th I’m afraid I’ll be a bit out of head due to I’m starting my university internship in Barcelona city, where I’ll be settled (in my former parent’s home) from monday up to friday every week for 2 months and half…. Of course I’ll love to keep coming here to read you as well, but I am not very sure how this will go, I predict I’ll be fuckin busy from now on till I’ll finish my studies this year on next June… it’s going to be a Hell!
😦
WOW, Ari! This is really shaping up! I’m so looking forward to being a part of it! 😀
I know, I am seriously surprised! Surprised and thrilled!!!
Ooo, pick me, pick me! (If there’s still any room? 😦 ) I love popular things and promise to approach anything you give me with a fresh brain. I’m looking forward to the reviews from this!
Yayyyy! I’m so doing it!
First set of reviews is up today: http://preview.tinyurl.com/73lkqfg
