Happy New Year From Scents Of Self!

P1040032

My New Year’s will be solitary and boring (like, my-midnight-kiss-is-my-cat levels of boring), so please allow me to live vicariously through your New Year’s plans! What will you be doing, and what perfume will you be wearing? Have you made any resolutions, perfume-related or otherwise? (My one resolution for 2013 is to graduate from college on time, for which I plan to reward myself with my all-time favorite perfume, Guerlain L’Heure Bleue parfum.)

  1. My partner works away for 3 weeks at a time so our youngest and I are heading up to stay with him for the night. I will probably be wearing Sweet Smile, a fragrance I designed myself, coz its my partner’s favorite. My goals for 2013 will be to if not give up then cut way back on sugar, and to do well with my perfume designs! Hope you have a great one! Xoxo

    1. How exciting that you design your own perfumes, and very sweet of you to accommodate your husband’s preferences! I cannot say I always do the same 😉 I can’t in good conscience encourage quitting sugar (it’s SUGAR!), but I wish you the best of luck with your second goal, Shannan!

  2. Have a happy New Year Ari! If its any consolation I will not be doing much on New Year’s Eve. I will most likely be asleep long before midnight because I have to work tomorrow which means I’ll be up at 5am. I’m thinking about resolutions but haven’t decided on any yet. I’m thinking I may buy less perfume and concentrate on enjoying the ones I have. I may limit myself to one bottle a quarter. We’ll see.

    1. Thank you, Poodle, you too! I think that most of us would find restricting ourselves to one bottle a quarter pretty tough, but you are a pretty tough lady, after all!

  3. My husband and I were never New Year’s Eve hell-raisers. Tomorrow we plan to head to NYC to go to the Met Museum. If we have the energy, we may go to a late showing of Les Miz, or save that for Jan. 1. Sometimes at midnight we’ve gone down to the Hudson River to look at the fireworks going off in Nyack.

Give Zelda a kiss for me too, and have a wonderful and fragrant 2012!

    1. Happy New Year, Patty!! Zelda can be both of our midnight kisses! You may not be hell-raisers, but your current and former New Year’s sound really fun and romantic to this NYC lover. Les Miz is GREAT, a wonderful way to spend either the last day of 2012 or the first of 2013!

      1. Hey Arielle,
It’s the same but with better packaging. I like it because the rose is glorious, in the true attar of the middle east style and the oudh is clean-ish. So while I’m bang up to date frag inclusions wise I feel like it’s less of an in your face statement. wear time is good too.
May i repeat? The packaging is AWESOME!!
        Portia xx

  4. Happy New Year to you! Mine will be spent picking up my father from the airport. His flight is scheduled to arrive at midnight, which just seems too cruel.

Today, I may have to go fragrance-free to avoid my mother loudly complaining about my preference for manly perfumes 😦

    1. And to you, dear baconbiscuit! My mother doesn’t much approve of my taste in perfumes either- all she said about my beloved Safran Troublant was “It’s not horrible.”

  5. Trust me, I’ve spent many a NYE sharing kisses w/ my kitty. I’m still of the opinion that they give the best kisses anyway. Little whiskers and purring. Or well, actually, pushing and fussing and trying to get away because they don’t like their wittle noses kissed.

I spent last NYE at my best friend’s house doing a photoshoot in her garage — she has a studio backdrop — and then subsequently having a ‘sewing party’ while watching the Big Lebowski and drinking White Russians as you should when watching that movie.

So … this year I’m making up for that by going to a charity masquerade gala hosted by the Washington Redskins — open bar, ya’ll. I’m super excited because I managed to snag this stunning crimson velvet backless Tadashi gown. Still not sure which perfume to wear w/ it, though. I’m wearing Lipstick Rose right now — I love, love, love this Ari. I loved it when I first smelled the sample you sent me, but to be able to properly spray it and indulge, I feel like Jean Harlow — but I’m not sure if it’s femme fatale enough for this dress which is serious Bond Girl territory. I really love the Montale Taif Roses I got for Christmas which is a pretty seductive rose, but still not sure whether I should go for something classic. Too many decisions. I need suggestions, I think.

    1. I’m so happy that Lipstick Rose is finally with someone who will fully appreciate her! Why DO cats so hate having their noses kissed?? Don’t they understand how terribly kissable their noses are?

Okay, everyone: Klytaemnestra needs a perfume for a gala/stunning crimson velvet backless Tadashi gown! She loves roses and crypt-like perfumes. Give her your best suggestions!

  6. Happy New Year Ari! Myself I’m working this evening, so I’m hoping it’ll be a very boring New Years Eve with nothing to do except eating all the candy at the hospital…

    1. He is having a great time! He’s on the LSE tennis team and says that Hopkins over-prepared him for the schoolwork. Thank you so much for the good wishes, Mals! Have a wonderful New Year!

  7. Happy New Year

It will be quiet for me, Watch my favorite holiday movie, Billy Wilder’s “The Apartment” with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. A toast to the new year at midnight then to bed! I will be wearing Mitsouko

    1. Quiet, but glamorous! I’ve only seen one Billy Wilder movie, Some Like It Hot (also with Jack Lemmon!) Clearly I need to watch The Apartment, too!

  8. Obligatory academic advisor comment: So how many credits will you be taking in the spring? ieeee!

I don’t have any plans for New Year’s Eve. I hardly ever do. It’s not really a big holiday in my opinion. My mom hates it and think it’s a “fake holiday,” so we never celebrated whatsoever growing up. I celebrated for a few years in high school/college/grad school, but since going back to work I’ve defaulted back to the “I don’t care about this holiday” setting. I’ll probably be cleaning house tonight! haha

  9. We’ve been invited to a party at a friend’s house, but will likely head home at about 12:04 because we’re old and boring that way. I have no idea yet what I’ll be wafting yet, but I’m seriously considering that Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia might hit the spot.

  10. I’ll have a pleasant relatively quiet celebration with several friends at friends’ house. I plan to wear Ormonde Jayne’s Ta’if.
    Happy New Year, Ari!

  11. My New Year’s Eve has consisted of wiping up random toothpaste in the bathroom (not mine), and desperately trying to get some calories into the cat. Not looking for sympathy, just saying peace and quiet sound pretty good! I hope you have a lovely New Year – you will smell great – and a great 2013 too!

  12. Happy New Year Ari! Me and the husband will be going to a very small gathering of friends, hosted by my brother and his wife. No boozing it up for me, due to some medications, so I get to be the designated driver. I will probably spritz something cozy – either Chene or a vanilla of some sort. It is quite cold here, well at least for here. I’m in San Diego and it’s going to be in the low 40s tonight! We aren’t used to this (not anymore at least – I’ve been here for 12 years now and I have gone soft.).

  13. Happy New Year Ari. My evening will be quiet and peaceful. Both my husband and I have a respiratory infection so no scent of the evening. We will be watching The West Wing and cuddling with our dog Pearl. Give Zelda lots of kisses, they are good for her. You will definitely graduate this year. 2013 is going to be a great new year.

  14. I also have a respiratory infection plus some fever and will be glad to stay home. My husband is on call so it looks like another New Year’s Eve with my two cats, Albus and Kiara. I am wearing Shiseido “Inoui” (on one wrist) and SL Santal Maiuscule. Ari, I just wanted to let you know I was deeply moved by your post about sending perfume to the eating disorders unit. Happy New Year to you and to everyone!

  15. Happy New Year, Ari! I went with my husband and daughters to the home of my 8-year-old’s friend for the evening. The 8-year-old girl gang was adorable! First New Year’s party I’ve been to in YEARS. Good food but a little dull–would have preferred an evening geeking out with my nerd posse 😀 Vero Profumo Rubj edp was my SOTE; I spent plenty of time sniffing and rolling my eyes at how delicious & naughty it is! We had to be good and take the kids home before midnight, but at least I had some champagne with my husband when the ball dropped 🙂

Hang in there with school–you’re almost done!!! Hope all goes wonderfully for you in the New Year!

    Best,
    Christy
